Sr. Nanoparticle Development Engineer

Niron Magnetics

Niron Magnetics

Minneapolis, MN, USA
Posted on Saturday, June 10, 2023

Niron Magnetics is a company developing and launching the only known magnetic material with the potential to displace widely used rare earth permanent magnets. These rare earth permanent magnets are found in electric motors, generators, sensors, actuators, and a variety of everyday machines. They are critical to the green economy. Unfortunately, the mining and refining of these materials incur harsh social and environmental costs. Further, reliance on rare earths represents a strategic supply chain risk, vulnerable to geopolitical interference and projected supply shortages.

Niron’s Clean Earth Magnet® is free of critical materials (including rare earth elements), which eliminates the environmental damage caused by their use. It is made up of abundant commodity inputs enabling a secure supply chain. Niron is comprised of a team of engineers, scientists, and business leaders with a desire to make a positive impact in our community. We are growing our team as we commercialize the Clean Earth Magnet®.

About the Position

The Sr. Nanoparticle Development Engineer will be a key enabler in the development and high-volume launch of the first novel magnetic material in over 40 years. This will be done primarily by driving the success of Niron’s proprietary research and developing the high volume processes to bring them to market. As a member of the Nanoparticle R&D team, this position will work in close collaboration with Niron’s Magnet R&D and Pilot Scale-up teams.

Primary Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Lead the technical development of Fluidized Bed Reactor (FBR) based nanoparticle processes, particularly gas/particle phase transformation reactions and CVD or ALD coating reactions
  • Develop process models using fundamental knowledge to design high volume processes and equipment
  • Assist operations engineering teams with the qualification of equipment and processes for high volume production
  • Assist process and product development teams with the ramp to high volume, and lead specific yield, throughput, quality and/or cost improvement projects
  • Lead material and process R&D projects to further advance the properties of the world’s foremost rare-earth-free magnets

In fulfilling these responsibilities, you will work primarily with Niron’s VP of Nanoparticle Development and CTO. The position will be most compelling for those with an interest in clean technology, highly scientific technology, and high growth start-ups.

Qualifications:

  • BS in chemical or materials engineering with 10+ years of work experience with highly engineered powders or MS/PhD in chemical or materials engineering with 5+ years of work experience with highly engineered powders
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally (less than 20%) to work with external partners to develop and scale new materials and processes
  • Strongly desired experience and expertise:
    • FBR process expertise
    • Particle / gas reaction process expertise
    • CVD or ALD process expertise, particularly with powders
    • Experience with metal-oxide reduction and nitriding processes
    • Particle/powder R&D with scale-up experience
    • Developing nanoscale powders and magnetic materials
    • Designing, developing, and qualifying large scale fluidized bed reactor and or ALD/CVD process equipment
  • Must have strong skills in these areas:
    • Conducting hands-on laboratory experiments and characterizations
    • Technical leadership and ability to work with cross functional teams
    • Presenting technical topics and development results to engineering and executive teams
    • Desire and ability to teach, mentor and develop other scientists and engineers at Niron
