Engineer, Nanoparticle Process R&D

Niron Magnetics

Niron Magnetics

Minneapolis, MN, USA
Posted on Friday, March 22, 2024

Niron Magnetics is a venture-backed start-up developing the only known magnetic material with the potential to displace widely used rare earth permanent magnets. These rare earth permanent magnets are found in electric motors, generators, sensors, actuators, and a variety of everyday machines. Unfortunately, the mining and refining of these materials incur harsh social and environmental costs.

Niron Magnetics has developed a magnetic material that is free of critical materials (including rare earth elements), which eliminates the environmental damage caused by their use. Niron is comprised of a team of engineers and scientists with a desire to make a positive impact in our community.

About the Position

The Nanoparticle Development Engineer will be a key enabler in the development and high-volume launch of the first novel magnetic material in over 40 years. This will be done primarily by driving the success of Niron’s proprietary research and developing the high volume processes to bring them to market. As a member of the Nanoparticle R&D team, this position will work in close collaboration with Niron’s Magnet R&D and Pilot Scale-up teams.

Primary Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Advance the technical development of nanoparticle fabrication processes, particularly gas/particle phase transformation reactions coating reactions.
  • Develop process models using fundamental knowledge to design high volume processes and equipment.
  • Assist operations engineering teams with the qualification of equipment and processes for high volume production.
  • Assist process and product development teams with the ramp to high volume, and lead specific yield, throughput, quality and/or cost improvement projects.
  • Lead material and process R&D projects to further advance the properties of the world’s foremost rare-earth-free magnets.

In fulfilling these responsibilities, you will work primarily with Niron’s Manager of Nanoparticle R&D. The position will be most compelling for those with an interest in clean technology, highly scientific technology, and high growth start-ups.

Basic Qualifications:

  • BS in chemical or materials engineering with 3+ years of work experience with highly engineered powders or thin films
  • MS/PhD in chemical or materials engineering with research experience with highly engineered powders or thin films
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally (less than 20%) to work with external partners to develop and scale new materials and processes
  • Must have strong skills in these areas:
    • Conducting hands-on laboratory experiments and characterizations
    • Technical leadership and ability to work with cross functional teams
    • Presenting technical topics and development results to engineering and executive teams
    • Desire and ability to teach, mentor and develop other scientists, engineers and technicians at Niron

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strongly desired experience and expertise in one or more of:
    • FBR process expertise
    • Particle/gas reaction and/or phase transformation process expertise
    • CVD or ALD process expertise, particularly with powders
    • Experience with metal-oxide reduction and nitriding processes
    • Particle/powder R&D with scale-up experience
    • Developing nanoscale powders and magnetic materials
    • Designing, developing and qualifying large scale industrial equipment

Compensation:

  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance, premiums paid 100% for employees
  • Equity position in Niron via stock option grant
  • 401k plan with company match
  • Mental healthcare support including therapeutic care
