Magnet Fundamentals R&D Engineer

Niron Magnetics

Niron Magnetics

Minneapolis, MN, USA
Posted on Wednesday, May 8, 2024

Niron Magnetics is a venture-backed start-up developing the only known magnetic material with the potential to displace widely used rare earth permanent magnets. These rare earth permanent magnets are found in electric motors, generators, sensors, actuators, and a variety of everyday machines. Unfortunately, the mining and refining of these materials incur harsh social and environmental costs.

Niron Magnetics has developed a magnetic material that is free of critical materials (including rare earth elements), which eliminates the environmental damage caused by their use. Niron is comprised of a team of engineers and scientists with a desire to make a positive impact in our community.

About the Position

Niron is seeking a Magnet Fundamentals R&D Engineer for its R&D and Pilot Production facility, located in Minneapolis, MN. This individual will be involved in many aspects of magnetic powders and fabricating magnets. You will be responsible for advancing the performance of FeN permanent magnets through fundamental understanding of the microstructural properties of the magnets, the processes used to manufacture the magnets and raw materials used.

You will work closely with the R&D and Analytical teams to design experiments and characterize the materials and magnets; you will propose next steps to further improve the magnetic performance. Part of the role will be hands-on processing of materials and experimentation in the laboratory and/or pilot facility. You would also perform FEMM simulations on magnetic and structural properties of magnetic assemblies. Niron has a fast-paced and collaborative work-environment, so a team-based mentality and agility is important. Furthermore, we are looking for someone who is passionate about sustainability and is excited to bring the Clean-Earth Magnet to the market!

Primary Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for advancing the performance of iron-nitride permanent magnets with a primary focus on magnetic performance
  • Hands-on characterization and interpretation of magnetic performance and its relation to the microstructural properties of FeN magnets and nano-powders and processing conditions used to create the microstructures
  • Devise, perform, analyze, and report results of experiments and proposal of next steps
  • Development of experimental and analytical methods for powder and magnet characterization
  • Simulation of magnetic and structural performance of magnetic assemblies through FEMM simulations
  • Perform all duties according to Niron’s EH&S Programs

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Strong engineering and materials science background, e.g. MS or PhD in materials science, materials engineering, mechanical engineering, powder metallurgy, nanotechnology, applied physics, chemical engineering or related field.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in materials-related manufacturing industry
  • Proficient with CAD design and experience with FEM/ FEMM modeling
  • Fundamental understanding of magnetic materials and characterization
  • Proficient computer skills with statistical and data visualization software – JMP, Minitab, SQL
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing roles and responsibilities in accordance with the needs of a growing, fast paced, high-tech startup
  • Collaborative mind-set, with strong work ethic and drive to succeed
  • Strong communication skills with ability to concisely convey the meaning of data and diligent commitment to record keeping
  • Ability to self-direct and meet deadlines

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with (nano-) powder characterization and processing
  • Experience with material formulation for injection and compression molding processes and/or experience working with filler modified polymers
